In Ireland, we have an abundance of Castles, but one of the largest and best-preserved castles is Cahir Castle in Co. Tipperary. Sitting in the centre of Cahir town, this is a magnificent castle to behold and will throw you into a medieval world full of history and adventure.

Sitting right on the river Suir, this castle would be best suited in an episode of Game of Thrones for its massive stone walls and towers.

Originally designed and constructed in the year 1142 by Connor O’Brien, the prince of Thormund, it was an imposing defensive castle. The castle was passed to the Butler family in the 14th century. Over the centuries the Butlers remodelled the castle, but it fell into ruin in the 18th century.

Belonging to its final Lord, Lord Cahir died in 1961, and the State took over the castle. It was declared a national monument in the late 20th century. It also featured in many TV shows and films, like Excalibur and Tudors.

Today there are regular audio/visual tours of the castle where you will learn all about the history of this stunning building. Tours must be booked in advance.

After you explore the castle, you can stop off in the Lazy Bean cafe just a few meters from the castle for some lunch and coffee.
