Today, the County Museum in Dundalk is considered to be one of the most excellent museums in the county!
Before it was a museum in 1994 it was a cigarette factory and an 18th-century distillery that boasted the largest chimney in the county.

The museum itself chronicles the development of Co. Louth, beginning as far back as the stone age all the way to the present day. The museum has terrific permanent exhibitions utilising artifacts discovered around the county along with interactive video displays. The story of this county in displayed over three galleries.

It has some fantastic items in their exhibits like a replica of the “Mell Flake”. It was a piece of human-made flint transported over an ice sheet within the gravel. It is considered to be one of the oldest artifacts found in Ireland. The permanent exhibitions have won the Gulbenkian Best Smaller Museum Award on two occasions, in 1995 and 1999.

The museum also has an exhibition on Ireland’s enlisted soldiers in world war one, where it looks into the motivation of why young men enlisted in the army, what their training regimen was for the war and what the reception was like for them returning to Ireland.
The County Museum Dundalk is a great museum to visit this weekend and will give you a perspective on Irish history that you may not have heard before.
