Get up close and personal with the most magnificent creatures in the world!

We've all heard of, and have probably visited Dublin Zoo in the Phoenix Park, but the Dead Zoo (The National Museum of Ireland), in the heart of Dublin is an up close experience with a massive collection of taxidermied animals from all over the world.

About the National History Museum of Ireland

The National History Museum of Ireland is home to an enormous collection of animals, fish, insects and any other creature you could possibly imagine. It's a fascinating day out for the whole family. The museum is located on the Southside of Dublin on Merrion street.

The Natural History Museum of Ireland was built in 1856 to allow the Royal Dublin Society to give a home to its growing zoological collection of stuffed animals and to open the massive collection for public viewing. The building is right beside Leinster House, the primary government building of Ireland. It was originally constructed as an extension to the parliament building as the Royal Dublin Society was based there.

The ground floor is where you will find the Irish animals section, most notably the skeletons of Giant Irish deer, Irish birds and other mammals. Upstairs is where The National History Museum of Ireland gets really interesting. You will discover thousands of preserved critters, like bears and tigers, bird's and elephants, and if you look straight up, you will recognise the skeleton of the blue whale stretching from one end of the room to the other. There is also a skeleton of the extinct Dodo bird.

The museum is just fascinating in terms of what your children will discover, and there is so much to find as the collection is so large. The National History Museum has regular exhibitions on display, and you can view the schedule for these exhibitions on their website. Many of these exhibitions are interactive and give children the opportunity to learn about various creatures in a very hands-on way.

The museum is free to enter, although they do appreciate small donations which you can leave at the entrance to help with the upkeep and maintenance of the museum.
